Body Mass Index

While weight is an important indicator for the state of an individual’s fitness, it is not the sole indicator.

Other indicators such as body mass index (BMI) are better indications of the physical condition, according to expert opinion.

As peoples bodies vary in shape and size, and as weight changes frequently, many physicians use an index as a measure called body mass, to determine whether someone is overweight or not.

This indicator applies to both genders and more specifically reflects the percentage of body fat in proportion to non-fat body mass (eg bone, muscle building, tissue, organs, blood).

To calculate your body mass, divide your weight (kg) by the square of your height (m), as follows: Body mass = kg / m2. The lower the percentage, the smaller the body mass.

According to the World Health Organization for adults over 20 years old the following applies:

BMI < than 20: UNDERWEIGHT

This group refers to people with weight below the normal.
The person is underweight and needs to increase body weight.
If you belong in this indicator should visit your doctor.
There is a probability of a disorder of metabolism.

BMI 20-25: NORMAL

This group refers to people with normal weight.
The person has the right weight.
BMI of 24-25 for males and 23-24 for women are ideal indicators of mass, depending on bone weight, provided that the person has normal fat.
If you belong in this group you have less chances of having a cardiovascular disease or diabetes type b, provided that you will maintain your weight.

BMI 25 to 29.9: OVERWEIGHT

This group refers to people with higher weight than normal.
There is a chance of first degree obesity if there is a high percentage of fat.
If you belong in this group there is a risk of developing hypertension, coronary heart disease or diabetes type B.
You should not increase your weight.

BMI 30 to 39.9: OBESE

This group refers to obese individuals.
The person is severely overweight.
Second degree of obesity if the person has a high percentage of fat.
If you belong in this group there is a serious risk of developing hypertension, coronary heart disease or diabetes type B.
You need consult a doctor.

BMI > From 40: SEVERELY OBESE

This group refers to severely obese individuals.
Third degree of obesity.
If you belong in this group there is a high risk of developing hypertension, coronary heart disease or diabetes type B.
You should definitely visit a doctor.
